Dr. Miguel Medina offers a unique plastic surgery experience through his diverse expertise and training; with an emphasis on the highest standards of professionalism and authenticity. As a Harvard and Johns Hopkins-trained plastic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in craniofacial and nasal surgery, Dr. Medina approaches rhinoplasty with a unique understanding of the intricacies of nasal anatomy. His approach ensures surgical precision and a result that balances functionality with beauty. He believes the nose is the gateway to the face and he strives for a nose that is a natural balance with the face opening, the midface, that brings attention to the eyes.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most technically complex procedures to perform; it’s also one of the most life-changing for patients. It is often referred to as the surgery of millimeters; even the slightest alteration has an immense effect on the nose, and by extension, the rest of the face. When performed well, it can transform the entire face by improving balance and harmony among the features, as well as remedy functional breathing issues to improve quality of life.

The benefits of rhinoplasty are as varied as the patients seeking the procedure. Each case is wholly unique. Some potential benefits of rhinoplasty include:

  • Enhanced aesthetics: The procedure can address common concerns – a crooked nose; a wide nose; humps or bumps on the bridge; wide or uneven nostrils; and a wide, or boxy nasal tip.
  • Improved breathing and function: Rhinoplasty is not just about aesthetics. Patients can get relief from functional issues such as a deviated septum, nasal obstruction, or injury-related issues. The results are better airflow, reduced snoring, and improved sleep.
  • Enhanced confidence: Disliking your nose is hard to hide. Rhinoplasty can help patients feel more confident, thus boosting their quality of life.
  • Long-term results: The nose changes as we age. Dr. Medina pays particular attention to creating results that will look natural and beautiful for life.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Candidates for rhinoplasty are adults or teens with fully developed nasal cartilage who feel dissatisfied with their nasal appearance, have breathing issues, or have a congenital defect or injury that they would like addressed. Because rhinoplasty can significantly affect facial appearance, patients must be emotionally prepared for change and have realistic expectations as to results. Ideal rhinoplasty candidates:

  • Are in good health;
  • Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit before and after surgery
  • Are prepared to care for their nose during recovery;
  • Have reasonable expectations for results and a positive outlook.

The best way to determine if rhinoplasty is the right fit for you is to schedule a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Medina. How Rhinoplasty Is Performed

Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

Your consultation with Dr. Medina is an important step in the surgical process. He prioritizes these conversations because they allow him to learn more about you, your goals, concerns, and then brainstorm ideas for achieving your desired results. He will examine your nose and provide you with before and after images. This way, you can see patients with results that look like your preferred result, or those who had a similar aesthetic concern before their rhinoplasty.

Dr. Medina will discuss the surgical technique that may be right for you; along with information about recovery and aftercare, so you can be as informed as possible about your procedure. If you both agree that you’re a good candidate for the procedure, he will devise your surgical plan and provide you with an accurate cost estimate. Dr. Medina’s goal is to give you the nose you desire, and that our goals are clear and aligned for the desired result.

Rhinoplasty Procedure Steps

Rhinoplasty is a very nuanced and complex procedure. Dr. Medina creates highly specialized surgical plans so his patients can enjoy results that reflect their natural beauty, rather than erasing their features. As such, every procedure is entirely unique.

A general rhinoplasty procedure may look like the following:

  1. You will be administered general anesthesia by a board-certified anesthesiologist for your optimum safety and comfort. Once fully numbed and asleep, surgery will begin.
  2. Dr. Medina will make careful incisions in discreet locations, as determined by his technique outlined in your surgical plan. Depending on your goals and the complexity of your procedure, these incisions may be inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or under the tip, across the columella (the tissue and cartilage at the base of the nose between the nostrils).
  3. Dr. Medina will then make the necessary changes to the nose, addressing aesthetic concerns while attending to functional requirements and the longevity of the results.
  4. Once Dr. Medina is satisfied with the results, he will close the incisions with sutures, and you will be monitored as you wake from surgery.

Rhinoplasty Recovery & Aftercare

Rhinoplasty recovery requires about one to two weeks of downtime.

Patients should expect to take that much time off work to ensure sufficient rest during the initial healing period. Bruising and swelling should resolve within two to four weeks, but expect long-term swelling to take up to a year to subside.

Immediately after your procedure, your nose may be put in a splint, with or without internal tubes. These measures are to keep your healing nose in place and protected from accidental damage. While they may be temporarily uncomfortable, splints are an important part of early rhinoplasty recovery. Dr. Medina will remove these and/or downsize them during your follow-up appointments.

Our team will provide you with more extensive recovery instructions, which may include some of the following:

  • Rest as much as possible in the first two weeks of recovery while gradually increasing light movement, such as walking, to maintain healthy blood circulation.
  • Protect your nose as best you can: Do not sleep on your side or face, touch your nose, or take out gauze or splints until directed to do so.
  • Sleeping with your head elevated and cold compresses can help reduce swelling and aid early healing.
  • Expect some bruising around the nose, eyes, and cheeks—but don’t worry, this is normal and temporary.

Always err on the side of caution during recovery, and call Dr. Medina if you have any questions about incorporating more activities into your routine as you improve.

What Results Can I Expect From Rhinoplasty?

After major swelling subsides, you’ll begin to see your final results emerge. The earliest results are typically visible along the nasal bridge. Patients with prior bumps or crooked angles will see straighter, smoother noses with a more pleasing profile. The more subtle adjustments, such as to the nasal tip, take longer to appear as swelling dissipates. The swelling will first come out of the bridge; it will take much longer for the tip. Early results are visible around 3-6 months and final results are visible in one year. The nose will constantly settle into shape. Finer tip work will begin to reveal itself at 6-8 months.

Once fully healed, patients are ecstatic with their results. Their noses now fit with their face, allowing other facial features to shine. Rhinoplasty offers greater facial balance and symmetry, along with improved breathing and function.
